RE: Eye on Artists: Led Zeppelin

in #boombox7 years ago

I think "Bring It On Home" is one of their most overlooked tunes. Easy to see why- it's the final track on Zeppelin 2, probably their most rockin' record all around. This song has so many casually cool elements.

The muted push of the blues intro is such a tease. The band knows how hard they're gonna slam you once the groove comes in. The riff Page plays to accompany Plant singing "Try to tell you, babe..." is one of his nastiest.

It's fun to compare the studio version to this live version

When it comes to the arrangement I think another element that sets Zeppelin apart is the decisions John Paul Jones makes about when to follow the guitar and when to contrast.

When the groove comes in the bass follows the guitar verbatim and it adds weight to the groove. Then when Plant starts singing the bass switches to some counterpoint. Not enough bands today following these examples.
