The single most important feature of a good writing

in #books7 years ago

I have read more books than I can remember, ever since 6th grade I used to read novels in my free time and even in class, instead of listening to the teacher and even now as a university student my passion for reading hasn't died. I have always felt that the single most important feature of a good writing re-readability. Reading a book once is easy, but if you enjoy it reading again (and again), despite knowing book's main content, that's the real hallmark of good writing.

There can be a number of factors that make re-reading enjoyable. Author's wit, intelligence, plot subtleties, character developments, story arc, richness of details, emotional complexity, forethought- and many others.

Based on this criteria of re-readability following are few of the works that I read more than twice:

  1. Hitchhikerk's Guide to Galaxy

  2. First four volumes of Harry Potter

  3. the Catcher in the Rye

  4. Catch 22

  5. Hobbit and Lord of the Rings

  6. Sherlock Holmes canon

  7. Anna Karenina

  8. Foundation Series

  9. For Whom the Bell Tolls

  10. Cryptonomicon

Continuing the list, there are also books that I liked immensely (and they are on my all time fav. list) but I couldn't go through them second time despite trying it more than once. Some of those are:

  1. The Da Vinci Code

  2. One Hundred Years of Solitude

  3. My Name is Red

  4. The Name of the Rose

  5. A Song of Ice and Fire

  6. Lord of the Flies

  7. Ender's Game

  8. Disgrace

  9. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time

  10. Middlesex

Donald Trump would be proud

Hi @taimur - Ender's game is on the same list too. Guess I could re-read the first 3 - but could't go throught the Shadows Saga again.

Did you like Dune?

Also, I've recently started publishing some writings of my own and I would appreciate an honest feedback.

Ah, I see a man of great taste.
Dune is a good book too. The series gets to be kind've too much after a while, but the first book is epic.

I'll follow you and read your content.

Thank you! Yes, it gets hard to read at Canonicate.

What do you think of Asimov?
