The Peculiar Science Behind the Movies - First Book Review
Book Review
Science(ish): The Peculiar Science Behind the Movies
by Rick Edwards and Michael Brooks
About the book
So the premise of this book is to explain the complex theory of the science behind some of the greatest blockbuster Sci-Fi films. The book aims to provide the explanations in a simple language that most people will understand and achieves this very well through the use of humour and colloquialisms.
The films that are covered in the book are
The Martian
Interstellar (my personal favourite)
Jurassic Park
28 Days Later
Back to The Future
Planet of The Apes
The Matrix
Gattaca
Ex Machina
Alien
Each of these films gets its own chapter, the author starts by introducing the scientific questions that the film raises, then moves on to a short description of what the film is about. After this is the meat of the chapter, the first part will be focused on how the scientific principles appear in the movie, then the author moves on to talk about the principle in general in the world of science and the chapter is finished off by the author coming back to the original point of the movie.
I thought that the way the author talks about the actual scientific principles behind the movie and not just the movie gives the book a lot more depth and gives the reader much more of a scientific insight into the principles.
This book is perfect for people who enjoy Sci-Fi movies, the science is not difficult to understand and the aim of the book I would say is to make it as simple as possible so that anyone could understand the concepts.
