Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf? The Girl In Red by Christina Henry - Book Review #42
Many thanks to Jonathan Ball Publishers for sending me a review copy!
- SPOILER ALERT * SPOILER ALERT * SPOILER ALERT *
Spinning the tale of Red Riding Hood in a more modern mindset, this highly believable post-apocalyptic journey of self-preservation, survival and human nature is a dark, and very creepy, edge-of-your-seat, thrill a minute rollercoaster ride that will hit you right in the feels!
“...it was never the Event - illness, asteroid, nuclear war, whatever - that was the problem. It was what people did after. And people always reduced to their least human denominators when things went bad.”
Christina Henry is another new author for me and her writing blew me away, completely; descriptive, flowing, bordering on elegant without being swishy and flowery, easy to understand bringing imagery to vivid life... Spanning across two timelines, Christina builds onto the world she has created, adding layer upon layer, yet simplifying human nature into its basest forms, maintaining that heavy dark cloud that settles on everything like a funeral march, keeping the reader enthralled and horrified.
But, enchanted with her writing as I am, her characters are her best creations; and I specifically mean Cordelia, or more commonly known as Red. Having a mixed-race young woman with a prosthetic leg, whom society would automatically label "disabled", as the main character sets her up as the underdog - and everyone loves an underdog, right? - but having her be a horror movie and book freak, enables Red to become a prepper, always preparing and planning in case the world comes to an end; but that doesn't mean her journey would be easy.
Red was determined to not be the first one to die during a zombie apocalypse or hold anyone back should they be forced to flee for their lives, so she prepped and prepped and prepped...
I am genuinely excited to want to read more from this author and I am pleased to say that I've heard only good things; here's looking forward to more! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.
