Police are reminding people to beware of bitcoin scams after a woman was scammed of $1,200 in digital currency.

The victim, who lives on the Gold Coast, was contacted by a man claiming to be from a company called bitcoin.com.au and said he had won $2,000 worth of bitcoin in a contest.

He said he needed his bank details to transfer the money and was asked to confirm this via text message. In doing so, she received another message saying that there was a mistake and that it would take three days for the payment to be completed.

The next day, she received another message saying everything went well and the transaction was successful. Then she got another message saying the transfer failed because there was not enough money in her bank account.

The woman contacted police after receiving several more messages from the scammer saying he needed more information before he could transfer money to her account.
