Another Summit in the NKPR
Love him or hate him, credit where its due. Could the standoff with North Korea be coming to an end?
Having met twice already, United States President, Donald Trump and North Korean leader, Kim Jung Un are scheduling yet another summit. It's encouraging to say the least. Peace talks could bring real change to the isolated nation, socially and economically, leading to prosperity for the people North Korea, and a cooling of tension in the Korean peninsula.
Since the Korean war, North Korea has isolated itself from the rest of the world, choosing communism and skepticism of the very real rewards of participating in the global economy. The constant threat of nuclear attack has loomed over many asian nations for decades, including Japan and South Korea.
In order to put a strangle on this threat, world leading nations have imposed harsh sanctions on North Korea, the United States levying the harshest. If North Korea is willing to play ball, they must disband their nuclear program and over time would see an easing of economic sanctions that have hurt the people and global relations. It has almost been a self reinforcing cycle.
By this same token, the question is whether or not the leadership behind North Korea can be trusted to throw down their arms and get with the capitalist program. Interestingly Kim Jung UN seems willing to do just that, something his father and his grandfather had been reluctant to do since the creation of, what some may view as, a rogue state.
In exchange for dismantling of the nuclear program and an easing of sanctions the people of North Korea would suddenly gain access to global commodity markets and as a huge producer of coal and other resources. In fact the peninsula is resource rich, but so far unable to participate in global trade due to the sanctions.
As long as talks stay constructive and the United States continues to build trust with the North Korean leader, we may be reaching the end of a war that never stopped, the weapons just changed.
Love him or hate him, this might be the most productive thing towards world peace the President of the United States has ever done.
