Hello everyone!
HOW CERTAIN CONSONANT LETTERS ARE PRONOUNCED
There are a large number of words in English in which certain consonant letters are silent. The reasons for this are of a complex nature. Some of these consonants, for instance, the consonant letter 'b' in words like bomb and climb, for example, were lost through assimilation to neighboring sounds and some, the consonant letter 'P' in pneumonia and psychology, for example, were dropped because they occur in combinations which were awkward to pronounce.
In certain other words additional letters were inserted because of the etymological influence of Greek and Latin but the earlier pronunciation of the word without that letter continued. The letter 'b' in words like debt and doubt, the letter 'c' in words like indict and victuals and letter 's' in words like aisle, isle and island are instances of this type.
In my next post, I'll share some of the commonly used English words in which certain consonant letters are silent.
