Is poetry supposed to adhere to any rule? Milk and honey

in #blog7 years ago

I usually don't read a lot of poetry so yesterday I picked up the so-called NY Times Bestseller "Milk and Honey". The whole time I questioned myself "So is this how poetry supposed to be or the author just suck?"

Seriously, if all it takes
to write a poem
Is to write like this
And add some edgy theme
I probably can
Do it too.

I agree immensely. Kaur does have a number of good poems in that book, but many are just one line statements, written and presented in a 'aesthetic' and 'poetic' way. They don't hold too much value, and most of the pages in that book are mostly blank. It's a pity that Kaur, with all the talent she has, decided to do something like this. I guess this is because most people wouldn't sit through 150 pages of sonnet like poetry... People are just too lazy, and short, edgy poems like this are the only thing they enjoy, or even worse, understand.

Makes sense, that's probably how it became a bestseller.
