Love your neighbor... but which one?

in #blog7 years ago

For people who believe in the existence of a supreme being or beings, it is only natural that a common agreement exists between the various religions since each religion often has its own sub sects since many who profess a religion hardly follow completely what the religion teaches. However, there is fairly a fundamental lesson taught by all these religions…well, the ones I have looked into. Cannot feature all in this article for the sake of brevity but… enjoy.

  1. “…One should never do that to another which one regards as injurious to one's own self. This, in brief, is the rule of Righteousness. One by acting in a different way by yielding to desire becomes guilty of unrighteousness. In refusals and gifts, in happiness and misery, in the agreeable, and the disagreeable, one should judge of their effects by a reference to one's own self…” Hindu (Mahabharata CXIII)
    HINDUISM: Mahabharata CXIII

  2. Never do to others what would pain thyself.
    HINDUISM: Panchatantra 3.104

  3. “You must not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people, but YOU MUST LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR
as yourself. I am the Lord.” Judaism (Leviticus 19:18)

  4. “Treat others as thou wouldst be treated by thyself.”
    SIKHISM: Adi Grandth

  5. “Desire not for anyone the things that ye would not desire for yourselves”.
    BAHÁ'Í FAITH: Gleanings 66

  6. “That nature is only good when it shall not do unto another whatever is not good for its own self”.
    ZOROASTRIANISM: Dadistan-i-Dinik

  7. All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
    CHRISTIANITY: Matthew 7.12

  8. Mujahid said that Abdullah ibn Amr slaughtered a sheep and said: Have you presented a gift from it to my neighbour, the
Jew, for I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Gabriel kept on commending the neighbour to me so that I
thought he would make an heir?
    ISLAM: Sunan Abu Dawood, 2446

  9. He will not enter Paradise whose neighbour is not secure from his wrongful conduct. –
    ISLAM: Sahih Muslim, 15

  1. Hurt not others with that which pains yourself.
    BUDDHISM: Udana 5.13

  2. Regard your Neighbour's gain as your own gain and your neighbour's loss as your own loss.
    TAOISM:T'ai Shang Kan Ying P'ien

  3. Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you.
    CONFUCIANISM: Analects 15.23

“Bottom line, if everyone treat everyone with respect, the world would be a better place” – An Atheist

Everyone is on point. :D

Quite true!

Hey Rex, I take it "Traditional religion" doesn't count, eh? Lolz

Technically, some of the religions cited are "traditional" but if we are coming home to Naija, there is what is known as "iwa pele" in the Yoruba religion which is also practised as Santeria or other forms has what is known as "iwa pele" which literally means "gentle/good character" and doing good to others is one of it.

Well said
