For the few of you who are not 100% up on your J Dilla lore, Amp Fiddler was responsible for introducing Jay Dee to the MPC and showing him how to use it in the early stages of his career. And while "Return of the Ghetto Fly" isn't the the first time that Amp Fiddler used a J Dilla beat for one of his songs (a few J Dilla tracks pop up on Amp Fiddler's 2002, Waltz of the Ghetto Fly), it seems as though it might be the first track Amp Fiddler used since his passing in 2006. So given the pretty much untouchable body of work that J Dilla left behind in his passing in 2006, I'd say it's safe to say that the student became the teacher.
One the production side of things, we have pretty classic Jay Dee-sounding beat: dusty cracking drums with that unmistakable funky swing, and those musical sample chops that seem so simple of first, but reveal their complexity upon listening a bit closer. In terms of vocals, Amp Fiddler and guest vocalist Neco Redd seem to be doing a modern day recreation of the "Theme With From Shaft", with Fiddler being all calm, cool, collected and Redd singing his praises in the background. There's also a solid verse from T3 (the only surviving member original member from J Dilla's underrated rap trio, Slum Village), who sounds perfectly at home on this beat. The fact that this new Amp Fiddler album is being released on Moodymann's Mahogani Music label, and this album just screams Detroit!
Definitely gonna be album to look out for when Amp Dog Nights comes out on Nov. 10th, which is available for pre-order on iTunes now!
Bonus: if you're interested in learning more on Amp Fiddler's history with Dilla, I highly recommend you check this Boiler Room interview with the man from last year.
