Worth Being a Nature Reserve
The location of Sawang basalt columns is in Krueng Jeuringeh stream, ± 8 km from Cot Calang Hamlet, the ultimate settlement of Gampong Riseh Tunong, Sawang, Aceh Utara. The journey is through through the jungle, up and down the hills are sometimes steep.
In a review of the CISAH in February 2013, it was observed that the stone structure is a collection of basalt columns similar to the Giant's Causeway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, which is already well-known and under UNESCO's protection as a world heritage site since 1986.
The stones are generally hexagonal shaped along the right edge of the flow of Krueng Jeuringeh looks like a hillside clud. The rows of basalt columns were found at that time along ± 403 meters with an altitude ranging between 8-10 meters. Referring to the geologist's opinion of the Giant's Causeway, such structures were formed by an eruption of an ancient volcano. The Giant's Causeway, which means a giant crossing or trajectory is a name taken from an ancient Irish legend about a giant named Finn McCumhail.
