Is Your Motivation Short Or Long?

in #blog7 years ago

No, I do not mean does it last the full 8 hours or fall short after lunch. I am not talking about day-to-day duration, I am discussing perspective. Is what motivates you attached to the long or the short game? Are you empowering yourself to run this month's race, or win the marathon and have the most podium finishes at the end of your career?

The difference is massive. If you are only motivated by this quarter's bonus spiff, and you are prioritizing by this motivation, the return on your investment is as short as your focus. No exceptions. Your return on investment is as short or long as your focus, perspective, and commitment.

If your focus expires in 30 or 90 days, naturally you will take actions which focus on similar time frames for a return. The Return cannot pay dividends which outlast your focus. The dividends cannot outlast the investment period. It doesn't work this way with financial investments; it will not work this way with relational, professional, or potential investments.

I know what may have run through your head. So many people I work with Only see the short game, they only evaluate on the short term. I will be a failure in their eyes if I think any longer term. You already know in your head this is incredibly submissive thinking. This is a mentality of one who has surrendered. Don’t surrender. That person is playing the short game, you are playing the long game. Nothing he or she thinks, says, or does in That game could ever cost you in This game – The long game.

Great rewards take time, that time demands the investment is still being made. You cannot cheat this system. Play the long game. Make your decisions today with next year in mind. Choose the job, career, and/or employer which motivates you for the long game. Once you are in that, look at all the motivating factors available, select the ones which have you thinking in a long-term, committed way. Stay this course, and I have no doubt you will reap the benefits. You will see and obtain the return on investment.

This is where I believe passion plays a critical role. Passion trumps commission and bonus structures. Passion even beats out position, title, and social perceptions. Money cannot sell you the way passion will. Passion can weather the storm which beats monetary incentives to the ground. Tomorrow's challenges have no limit; your human resources budget has a crystal clear limit.

Why would you even consider bringing a slingshot to a gunfight? Such strategies are not only wasteful, but also purely reckless. This is a battle which is won and lost at the start. Choose to invest in your long-term goals and dreams. Everything will follow.

You know what game to play, and you know how to win that game - the only question remaining is: Which motivation will you choose?
