BLANGKON TRADITION

Blangkon is a head cover made from batik and used by men as part of traditional Javanese dress. According to his form, blangkon is divided into 4 blangkonon Ngayogyakarta, blangkon Surakarta, blangkon Kedu, and Blangkon Banyumasan. For some types of blangkon there is a bulge on the back of blangkon. This bulge signifies the model of men's hair that often tied their long hair on the back of the head, so that part is poking at the back of blangkon.

The term Blangkon comes from the word blank, a term used by the Javanese people to say something ready to use. Formerly blangkon not round and ready to wear, but just like other headband that is through complicated binding process. Over time, it creates innovations to make ready-made headbands, hereinafter dubbed as blangkon.

Blangkon is actually a practical form of iket which is a head cover made of batik and is used by men as part of traditional Javanese attire. For some types of blangkon there is a bulge on the back of the blangkon called mondholan. This Mondholan signifies the model of men's hair that often tied their long hair on the back of the head, so that part is poking at the back of blangkon. The hair coil must be tight so as not to easily escape.

Now the long strand of hair that has become modified since most people now have short hair by making mondholan stitched directly on the back of blangkon. Blangkon Surakarta mondholannya trepes or sprawl is mondholan Yogyakarta style in the form of a round like onde-onde.
