Mexico 8.2 Earthquake / Strange lights in the sky/ My experience

On September 7, Mexicans and some of our neighboring countries, we witnessed the strongest earthquake ever registered in Mexican territory.

So far it is known that caused the death of dozens of people living in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, and Oaxaca, the latter being the most affected; as well as significant and moderate material damages in the capital.

El día 7 de Septiembre, los mexicanos y algunos de nuestros países vecinos, fuimos testigos del terremoto más más fuerte que se ha tenido registro en territorio Mexicano.

Hasta el momento se sabe que causó el deceso de decenas de personas habitantes de los estados de Chiapas, Tabasco y Oaxaca, siendo éste el más afectado; así como daños materiales significativos y moderados en la capital.

It was 11:55 pm on September 7, I was getting ready for bed. Even though my house is located in front of a Primary School, I heard the seismic alert ring. When the earthquake began, it was not something significant, it was not something that we had not already lived.

My mom tried to get the whole family together, but my dad and I stayed on the second floor because he was already sleeping and I could not tell him in time. My parents witnessed the Mexican earthquake of 1985, so I understand that there is a greater fear. They saw hospitals, hotels and condominiums, crumbled by the force of the earthquake.

Eran las 11:55pm del 7 de septiembre, yo me encontraba preparándome para dormir. A pesar de que mi casa está ubicada frente a una Escuela Primaria, yo escuché que sonara la alerta sísmica. Cuando comenzó el temblor, no fue algo significativo, no era algo que no hubiéramos vivido ya.

Mi mamá trató de reunir a toda la familia, sin embargo mi papá y yo nos quedamos en el segundo piso debido a que él ya estaba durmiendo y no pude avisarle a tiempo. Mis padres presenciaron el terremoto del año 1985, por lo cual entiendo que exista un mayor temor por parte de ellos al tener esa experiencia donde vieron como hospitales, hoteles y condominios enteros, se desmoronaban por la fuerza del terremoto.

After a few seconds the movement started, everything was returning to normal, however, from one moment to another the intensity increased. It was very worrying because many factors influenced that. First of all, all the dogs from neighboring houses began to bark and howl, followed by the sound of car alarms and sirens of ambulances and patrols that began to prowl the area.

At this point, the movement was at its maximum intensity, the lights began to turn on and off until finally we got in total darkness. At this point, it was where I noticed the window, since I was on the second floor, those strange lights that appeared in the sky. Because of the scare and confusion, the first thing I thought about was that the transformers or street wires were making a dead short circuit.

Después de unos pocos segundos que comenzó el movimiento, todo estaba regresando a la normalidad, sin embargo, de un momento a otro la intensidad incrementó. Fue un momento muy preocupante debido a que muchos factores influyeron en eso. Primero que nada, todos los perros de casas vecinas comenzaron a ladrar y aullar, seguido de ruido de alarmas de carros y sirenas de ambulancias y patrullas que comenzaron a rondar la zona.

A este punto, el movimiento estaba en su máxima intensidad, las luces comenzaron a prenderse y apagarse hasta que finalmente nos quedamos en una obscuridad total. En este momento fue donde me percaté por la ventana, ya que me encontraba en el segundo piso, de esas extrañas luces que aparecían en el cielo. Debido al susto y confusión, lo primero que pensé es que los transformadores o cables de la calle estaban haciendo corto circuito.

It is well known that in a situation of stress, the seconds run doubly slow, however the time we spent recharged on one of the pillars of the house seemed eternal. When it was over, we met with the rest of the family and we were cut off as we had no light or signal on cell phones.

When we returned to electrical power we knew that the preliminary magnitude was 8.1, being corrected hours later to 8.2, remaining as the strongest earthquake registered here.

All classes were suspended at all levels of basic education, however being a college student I attended my faculty, located two hours from home. After the inefficient speed of response and lack of communication with our Principal, we were evicted from college due to we’re still waiting for the aftershock.

Es bien sabido que en una situación de estrés, los segundos transcurren doblemente lentos, sin embargo el tiempo que pasamos recargados en uno de los pilares de la casa nos pareció eterno. Cuando terminó, nos reunimos con el resto de la familia y quedamos incomunicados ya que no teníamos luz ni señal en los celulares.

Cuando volvimos a tener energía eléctrica pudimos enterarnos que la magnitud preliminar era de 8.1, siendo corregida horas después a 8.2, quedando como el terremoto más fuerte registrado aquí.

Las clases fueron suspendidas en todos los niveles educativos básicos, sin embargo al ser estudiante de universidad asistí a las instalaciones de mi facultad, ubicada a dos horas de mi casa. Todo para que después de la ineficiente velocidad de respuesta y falta de comunicación con nuestro Rector, fuéramos desalojados de las instalaciones debido a la réplica que aún se espera.

As for the lights I mentioned, I could later verify that such events are due to, according to some theories, the generation and release of energy in large-scale earthquakes, called "Earthquake Lights"

En cuanto a las luces que mencioné, pude comprobar después que tales sucesos se deben, según algunas teorías, a la generación y liberación de energía en movimientos telúricos de gran magnitud, llamadas “Luces de Terremoto”

I consider myself fortunate because in the capital and surrounding areas there were no tragedies registered as those reported in the southern states.

In spite of all the bad things that it can mean, these are the opportunities we have to unifying like country, like citizens and brothers. Mexico is in the best willingness to help all those affected people.

Me considero afortunada ya que en la capital y zonas aledañas no se registraron tragedias como las que fueron informadas que ocurrieron en estados sureños.

A pesar de todo lo malo que pueda significar, son las oportunidades que tenemos de unirnos como país, como ciudadanos y hermanos. México se encuentra en la mejor disposición para ayudar a todos nuestros afectados.
