Angelfish – Elegant Aquarium Fish
Angelfish – Elegant Aquarium Fish
Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) are popular freshwater fish from the cichlid family (Cichlidae). They are highly valued by aquarists worldwide for their distinctive appearance and calm temperament.
Origin and Natural Habitat
Angelfish originate from the tropical rivers of South America, primarily the Amazon, Orinoco, and Essequibo basins. In the wild, they inhabit calm waters with dense vegetation, which provides them with shelter and protection from predators.
Appearance
Angelfish are characterized by their flattened, disc-shaped bodies and long, vertical fins that give them a majestic appearance. They can grow up to 15 cm in length and around 25 cm in height (including fins). Their coloration is highly variable, ranging from silvery with black stripes to various cultivated varieties, such as golden, marbled, or veiled types.
Aquarium Requirements
Tank size: A minimum capacity of 150 liters is recommended, though larger tanks are preferable, especially for larger groups of fish.
Water temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F).
Water parameters: pH 6.0–7.5, soft to slightly hard water.
Plants and decorations: Dense vegetation and open swimming spaces are ideal.
Behavior
Angelfish are social creatures but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They thrive in groups of 5 to 6 individuals. They can be kept with other peaceful species, but very small fish should be avoided, as they might be mistaken for food.
Diet
Angelfish are omnivorous. Their diet should be varied and include dry foods, frozen foods (e.g., bloodworms, daphnia), and vegetables (e.g., blanched spinach leaves).
Breeding
Angelfish are egg-layers. They form monogamous pairs that lay eggs on smooth surfaces, such as plant leaves or aquarium glass. The parents actively care for the eggs and fry, a characteristic typical of cichlids.
Fun Facts
Angelfish are among the most intelligent aquarium fish and can recognize their keeper.
Their elegant, slow movements have earned them the nickname "angel fish."
Angelfish are an excellent choice for anyone who appreciates beauty in their aquarium and seeks the tranquility these graceful fish bring.
