Finding a Job Through the Eyes of a Millennial

When I was growing up I never had the “this is what I want to be when I grow up” moment.

I saw it with my friends and peers but never had it for myself. For me personally I couldn’t fathom picking only one thing. The thought alone felt daunting. How can I pick one thing to do for the next thirty plus years before I retire? I’ve always labeled myself as a dabbler; always wanting to try something new, have a new experience or learn a new skill, then move onto the next thing. Although I think it’s a great way to learn and discover yourself better, it doesn’t exactly pay the bills; at least not consistently.

What it comes down to is me not wanting to settle for something.

Feeling like I can “have it all” or “do it all” shouldn’t be seen as a daydreamer’s viewpoint or unattainable. Now if I sat on my butt saying I want all these things but do nothing to make it happen then by all means please smack me back to reality.

The fact of the matter is I sat down and made a list of goals, dreams, and ways to have my ideal “job” while still consistently bringing in a steady income.

Now, as a person whose resume looked like a jumbled mess of “jack of all trades” odd jobs and past experiences, I was a little worried that finding a new job in a new state would be difficult. I didn’t want my resume to come off as someone who doesn’t commit to anything or has lack of purpose. I’m not going to lie, after applying to over 15 places and only hearing back from 2 or 3 it was discouraging.

I had to learn the hard lesson that the world doesn’t owe me anything.

I’m not entitled to ANY of these jobs. It was a humbling experience to say the least. Eventually after interviewing at a few places I accepted a job at Goodwill. Some people may read that and think, really Goodwill? And to you people I say hell yeah Goodwill! When I interviewed I had the best time. My boss is so kind and I could tell right away that she loves her job, loves her employees and loves what the company stands for.

Having a job with amazing coworkers and a company that you believe in, in my eyes, is a wonderful opportunity and great steeping stone. You are surrounded by people who are there to help build you up and be a plethora of knowledge and connections for you. For me it was a clear steep in the right direction.
