How to Handle Toxic Co-worker (Real Talk)
Every workplace has them - the negative, gossipy, mean-spirited or super-competitive people who make your work life hell. We all like to think our coworkers as friends, but what happens when you become the target of this toxic people?
Learn how to deal with them without risking your own career/success.
Preventive Measures
It is wise to have some good measures in place to protect yourself if you ever fall under a colleague's attack. Always have backup for everything you've done in case a coworker tries to place blame on you.
This way, you can answer any difficult questions from your boss confidently, and it won't just be your word against somebody else because you have written proof (might be a file on your computer).
Avoid his/her Drama, Laugh if Possible
I don't get upset if he/she is fabricating stories (again). It isn’t new. If you jump in to her trap and approach her the wrong way ‘coz you almost lose patience. You might get affected and lose focus on your job. I'm not mean, and I try to feel sorry for him/her for being in a state of mind that triggers him to create drama to make himself feel better. I just avoid the situation and try to find the humor in the situation, if any.
Try to Communicate
There are times, though, when avoidance and humor won't work, and you have no choice but to address the situation. If it comes down to having to confront the coworker, try and approach the situation with logic, not emotion. It is important for you to honestly make an effort to communicate with your coworker and try to see where he/she is coming from.
Don't Get Too Close
Keep a safe distance to avoid getting sucked into the toxicity. It's contagious! It’s okay to get along with them especially when you’re in the same department, just talk about work-related issues but not personal.
Seek an Alliance
Sometimes the best remedy is trading stories with your close friends (outside of the office) and finding humor and comfort in knowing you're not alone. For me, it’s the best thing to do rather than fighting back because you might end up as the ill-mannered one in your workplace. And you don’t want it to happen, right?!
Exit
If you really can’t hold on the situation and you feel you’re gonna explode anytime, better if you leave not because you’re an incompetent and unproductive employee but you choose to be more professional than having a bad brand on your workplace.
