Journey to the West TV (English)

Last year, Black Myth: Wukong gained widespread popularity. As the first AAA game developed in China using Unreal Engine 5, it captured global attention with its stunning visuals and rich adaptation of Chinese mythology. My kids became particularly intrigued by the game and wanted to learn more about the story behind it.

Journey to the West is the classic novel that inspired Black Myth: Wukong. Written in the 16th century by Wu Cheng'en, it tells the legendary tale of the monk Xuanzang’s pilgrimage to India in search of sacred Buddhist scriptures. Accompanying him on this perilous journey are three disciples, the most famous being Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. Wukong, born from a stone and possessing immense strength and magical abilities, was initially rebellious and defied the heavens. However, after being subdued by the Buddha, he was given a chance at redemption by protecting Xuanzang on his quest. Their adventure is filled with mythical creatures, devious demons, and profound lessons on perseverance, loyalty, and transformation.

The novel is not only an epic fantasy but also a rich allegory filled with philosophical and moral teachings. My kids, fascinated by Wukong’s character, were eager to dive deeper into his abilities, such as the 72 transformations, cloud-somersaulting, and mastery of the golden staff. Seeing their curiosity, I introduced them to different adaptations of Journey to the West, from traditional Chinese operas and classic TV series to animated films. It was fascinating to watch them connect the dots between modern gaming and ancient storytelling, realizing that Wukong’s legend has transcended centuries to inspire new generations in unique ways.

My sons are BBC (British Born Chinese) - they don't speak much Chinese, thus, I let them watch the English version instead.
