Gun Violence in America

in #blog7 years ago

Almost one month ago, a man took open fire on a congressional baseball practice. The United States House of Representatives Majority Whip, Steve Scalise, was shot and underwent several surgeries in the first 24 hours. Last Wednesday, Scalise was readmitted to the ICU and went through another surgery to control infection.

Scalise is not the first congress member to have been shot. In January 2011, Gabby Giffords was shot in the head in an assassination attempt. She managed to make a miraculous recovery and she speaks out against gun violence now along with her husband.

Why then do lawmakers want to loosen our gun laws even more?

In December 2012, 20 children and six adult staff members at The Sandy Hook Elementary School were fatally shot. In June 2016, 49 people were killed and 58 others were wounded in the Pulse Nightclub shooting.

According to Gun Violence Archieve, there has been almost 200 mass shootings and over 8,000 deaths related to gun violence in the United States in 2017 alone.

Why is this not enough to create sound gun laws in this country?

I do not believe all guns should be completely banned in this country, that is not reasonable or practical. Guns are used safely by many people in this country everyday, including law enforcement and hunters. Guns can be used for protection or to feed people.

But what practical use does an AK-47 have in a suburban neighborhood? What reasonable use does a machine gun have outside of war?

Guns that are not reasonable and practical do not have any place in a country. Thousands die every year because of gun violence, but nothing is being done to stop this. I think most people agree that something should be done to regulate guns in the United States.

Many issues go into gun violence in America, including mental health treatment, poverty and police shootings. There is not a one answer solution to gun violence, but steps should be taken to reduce the deaths and injuries we see related to guns.

There are many sides to gun violence and I ask that you keep any comments polite and respectful. Share your opinion, but don’t be a jerk. Thank you!

It's been proved that it's not the guns, it's just because of the US being full of social unrest, the country has been divided by a sick two party system. The corrupt officials and politicians aren't help either.

Thank you for sharing! There's definitely a lot that goes into this complex issue!

Gun owners know that it's a step process, eliminate 1 category of guns, then a few years later go back and eliminate another category until some point in the future where all rights are gone, its the long game of the anti gun advocates that have gun owners concered. Unfortunately, even though it may be reasonable to eliminate certain categories of guns, or make certain guns more difficult to possess, because that will be the first step of a continued assault on the 2nd amendment those actions are opposed vehemently every time. Unfortunately there are many people who believe the population should have no guns and no rights to defend themselves, the far right and far left not reaching a middle ground always causes issues.

A middle ground is always hard to find on complex issues. Thank you for sharing!

It is terrible everywhere. I would ban guns from
