What does it mean to be weird? We use this word to mean odd, off, deviant, even disgusting or unsavory. But plenty of people in my age group use it as a sort or cultural calling card.

The root word here is wyrd, which meant the power to control fate, or that which comes, as wyrd was one of the Norns. The Norns were the three goddesses in Norse legend who represented fate and destiny, dictating the destiny of men.

In middle English, it took on a new meaning because of the weird sisters, a sort of evolution of the Norns. These witches were capricious and dangerous, and Macbeth in particular described the sisters as odd, strange, or even disturbingly different.

So again, what do we mean when we say things like

I like it weird!

I love how weird you are!

You're so weird!

It means we recognize your deviancy - and celebrate it! It means I see you not doing things normally, and I like it. It means you challenge assumptions, and you ARE odd, you ARE strange, and that's awesome.

In a world that largely likes to pretend it's got it all sorted out already, it's nice to see others take their own little stand, to see others deciding to make their own rules.
