Free Comic Book Day Adventure 2018 (and Comic Giveaway)

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

If you haven't heard of Free Comic Book Day, you are missing out! It is the first Saturday of May each year. Most comic stores participate, and there are tons of free comics that are given away for free. Some online stores participate if you buy before the end of today, like Things From Another Planet so act fast! These free comics are a promotional deal to get people interested, or rekindle interest in comic books. I think this is really important for the preservation of this art form. It has struggled through the modernization of print to digital. Piracy involved with digital, and the extremist politics that are being forced into seemingly every entertainment outlet. I hope people will keep comics alive, because comics are one of the reasons that gave me motivation to learn to read. People still seem to have interest, because this was the line at the first place I went to.

I decided to take my three-year-old daughter to a couple local comic shops to get her first comics. She loves when I read her comics, but I don't want to risk her touching them. Three-year-olds are disgusting creatures covered in filth. I love her, but I also want to retain value on my beloved comic collections.

She was greeted by a man in ass tight spandex with an obvious sock in his crotch. She was rightfully scared until he left. She got a spiderman mask for free out of the encounter. She got a bag with the door opener comic and a certificate for $5 in store (to be used on another day with a purchase over $10). She conned a local artist at a booth for a picture of Goku (no resemblence I can see). There was also free shaved ice, which she covered her face and clothes with, as any three-year-old should. Yes, the mask is irregularly long and makes her look like a Xenomorph XX121 from the hit 80's movie Aliens.

I was surprised, Waterfront Comicsput on a good show. There were artists, free food, in-store certificates, cosplayers and of course free comics. Most of the people there seemed to be volunteers or family of the store owner. Their booths were set up outside in an alley, and thankfully the weather was great. It's nice to see nerd activities outside for once.

They offered four free comics (plus the door kicker) for every person that showed up. Then they charged $0.50 for each additional comic after that. This seemed very reasonable as they counted my daughter as a person. I got 8 free comics and bought $6 worth of extras and all three of the Star Wars Day exclusives from the day before. Here are all of the comics I got from this store.

I drove a half hour to Concord California to go to the next comic shop. My daughter was instantly attached to her new comics. She was serious business about reading the Adventure Time comic. She has seen the show before and loves Finn and Jake. We made a pit stop to eat lunch with my Mom and I gave my daughter some "grandma time" while I looked at my comic haul before rushing to stand in line again. My Mom has a gigantic African Tortoise, here is a picture of my daughter to scale just how big the turtle is!

The second comic shop we went to was Flying Colors Comics . This place was packed, and there was even a news crew there when I showed up. We waited in line, but it didn't take as long as expected. There were tons of happy children running around and reading comics. There was a single booth with a local artist signing comics. When I got in I browsed the nicks and dents boxes of discount graphic novels. I managed to find soft covers for $3! Hardcovers for $6! I ended up buying $90 worth of graphic novels for $18! They only gave out three free comics to each customer and no option to buy more. I grabbed 6 more comics I didn't get from the first store. I probably could have grabbed nearly all of the free comics available, but I had so many I figured it would be a waste if I grabbed titles I knew I wouldn't read. If I don't like these I guess they become additional sacrifices to the cruel hands of my three-year-old. Here are the graphic novels and additional free comics I got from this store.

I enjoyed reading this! I love the funny Goku picture and how your daughter loves the Adventure Time comic (I've been watching the show). The deals there are superb compared to the ones in my country. I think most comics would cost me around 3-10$ each even if they're on sale. The ones I want would go up to 50$ (hard cover, big ones) so I can't really buy them without my wife getting angry haha. Thanks for sharing photos of the ones you bought!
