The Uncommon Life

Scripture Passage: Genesis 5:13-32

Meditation: Gen 5:22-24 “And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”

During the first two thousand years of man’s history on earth, the majority of people had little else that could be said about them than the fact that they lived, had children and died. Enoch lived during this season before the flood of Noah, but something was different with his life. He was not just another person that lived, had children and died. He did something nobody else had done before him. He pioneered a new way of life. Others worshipped God. He walked with God. Obviously something must have happened about the time that He gave birth to Methuselah that spurred a new quest for God and His ways. There was no record that he walked with God before then. So he was not born that way. It was a habit and lifestyle he had to consciously imbibe. He made it happen by choice. Walking with God is a choice each of us can make.

For Enoch, it was not just about fulfilling the obligation of man to worship his creator. He decided to love God, to get to know Him personally and to develop a close walk with Him. It was a close and intimate relationship, and he did it so well that the impact of his life is still being felt over 4000 years later. His was a typical Uncommon Life.

What can we learn from Enoch? We learn that nobody has to have done it before you came in the scene. Everything must have a beginning, so you can be the one to start it. You can pioneer. The Uncommon Life is a pioneering life.

We also learn the value of how we live. Life is more about who you choose to become and how you lived than what you do. Enoch lived a life that others could emulate. It would have been hypocrisy if the only reason he wanted intimacy with God is so that men would see him as special. No! That was not his motive. He lived for God. It was a private life, but no one can have a private life of intense intimacy with God without God displaying His glory through that person in public. God is seeking such persons. Will you be that kind of person?

Mat 6:6,17,18 “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.”

The man who lives the Uncommon Life does not just follow the trends of his generation. He is willing to be different and to make a difference. For that man, the smile of God is more important than the acclaim of men. Jesus said of Martha when her sister Mary asked Jesus to rebuke her for not joining in the house chores instead of sitting at the feet of the master to listen, “... she has chosen the better part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Those who give time to God in private will have God give them men’s attention in public.

Long after you are dead and gone, your Uncommon Life can still be resonating and blessing many. The only thing that can outlive you is not what you did but how you lived. May God’s grace be lavished on you to live a life that others can emulate in Jesus name.
