Fresh coffee from Papua New Guinea.

The Western world didn't know much about Papua New Guinea until very recently, though people have been living there for more than 40,000 years. Coffee production got a foothold here less than 100 years ago, and even though it is quite remote, coffee industry in Papua has still been subject to the plague of coffee leaf rust since the late 1980s.

Fresh coffee from Papua New Guinea is beginning to arrive, and has turned some heads at our cupping table. Typically from smallholder family farms, each producer cultivates coffee on 1 to 2 hectares of land. The coffee is fully washed and sun dried at the Kuta mill, which has been in operation for over 40 years. This mill operates between the Ulga and Kolga tribes and has become a place of common ground for producers who have traditionally been in conflict because of tribal differences, a very serious problem in some parts of PNG.

With any luck, coffee can help bring some of these communities together.
