Find Deals On Cyber Monday, The Most Important Day Of The Year For e-Commerce

Cyber Monday Is Relatively New

The origin of the term “Cyber Monday” is quite simple actually, and it didn’t occur very long ago. Back in 2005, retailers noticed that there was a spike in sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving in the U.S., so the National Retail Federation decided to make the Monday after Thanksgiving a shopping holiday. Ellen Davis, a woman on the PR Team at the National Retail Federation, came up with the term “Cyber Monday” and the holiday was officially born. Of course, the increase in e-commerce sales during that specific time of year had already been a trend for a while since e-commerce started to take off in the mid to late 90s. The term “Cyber Monday” itself is a nod to the earlier shopping holiday, Black Friday, which traditionally occurs on the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. and officially starts the holiday shopping season.

Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, or another winter holiday, chances are you buy gifts between the last weekend or two in November and the first week of the new year. With so many holidays packed into a short amount of time, and a celebration of the end of one year and the beginning of the next, the time period has traditionally brought in the most amount of money in retail sales.

In the U.S. Thanksgiving is a national holiday that is not religiously affiliated, thus it is celebrated by the majority of Americans and is the perfect time to start the shopping season. On Thanksgiving, people usually think about the people in their lives that they are thankful for and so they are in the right frame of mind to treat those people to extravagant gifts soon after. Businesses know this and have always taken full advantage of it.

Cyber Monday Sales Have Increased Over The Years

Cyber Monday sales have increased over the years because online businesses have begun to offer more deals on the shopping holiday. Also, in general, online shopping has increased as more people have gained internet access and mobile phones have become yet another device that people can use to shop online. Mobile phone sales have increased. Only 2% of online shopping was via mobile in 2011 but 60% of online shopping was done via mobile in 2017! The graph below shows that Cyber Monday sales online have now eclipsed those of Black Friday as the holiday has increased in popularity and e-commerce businesses have offered increasingly better deals on Cyber Monday!

In 2018, more people shopped online than in stores. The National Retail Federation reported that from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday 2018, 41.4 million people shopped only online and only 34.7 million people shopped exclusively in stores. Also, Black Friday online sales increased 23.7% when compared to 2017. Is this a sign that the Black Friday that traditionally involved traveling to retail locations and shopping in physical stores may eventually die out? Perhaps. To many people, the thought of battling traffic and traveling all around the city and then fighting through crowds to eventually wait in a long line to purchase holiday gifts is much less appealing than simply turning on their computer and browsing the internet to find what they want.

It’s Much Safer To Shop Online And Take Advantage Of Cyber Monday Deals

An aspect of Cyber Monday that people often don’t focus on as much as the fact that sitting at home in your pajamas and ordering toys online for your niece and nephew can actually be the safer option. If you actually travel to stores in your car on Black Friday, or any other day for that matter, you have to factor in the fact that you may be required to spend more time in your car or on a bus. Unfortunately, accidents are always a possibility in that case. However, if you order what you need online on Cyber Monday and take advantage of those deals instead of what you can get in-store on Black Friday, you can save time and eliminate the possibility of an accident.

Many people often do not consider the other danger involved with shopping on Black Friday; the other shoppers. Some shoppers just don’t know how to be patient, and the consequences of this have often been disastrous. Stories of people being trampled by shoppers have made the news too often. It’s a good thing that it has become so easy to get packages delivered a day or two after ordering them online. Now we can all choose whether to risk encounters with our fellow shoppers at the beginning of the holiday season, rather than feeling like we have to encounter them.

The Problem With Shopping Online

Choosing to purchase products online rather than at the mall can help you to prevent physical injuries caused by impatient shoppers, but you can still encounter mental stress caused by hackers. By choosing to shop online, you have provided hackers with the opportunity to steal your credit card number and/or other personal information. You could even end up becoming a victim of the next famous commerce data breach!

Thanks to AllForCrypto and our next-generation e-commerce marketplace where payments are made in cryptocurrencies, this problem associated with shopping online will be eliminated. It seems like every year the holiday advertisements start earlier than the year before, and in their efforts to attract customers and beat competitors, company’s offer more enticing deals as well.

Cyber Monday Has Become Cyber Weekend And Is Spreading Across The Globe

With more people choosing to shop online on Black Friday as well as Cyber Monday, the entire four day weekend from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday is now becoming more of a Cyber Weekend. Records show that the shopping holiday is also becoming a global phenomenon, with spikes in sales over the “Cyber Weekend” in the U.K., Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands. Canada experienced the biggest growth in sales over that weekend in 2017 with an increase of 18% over the previous year.

What’s particularly interesting about the spread of this shopping holiday is that the weekend has always started with the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, which is a very American holiday. So it’s a combination of excellent marketing of the shopping holiday weekend, general trends toward globalization, and the international presence of many companies that have always offered deals over this specific weekend in the U.S. that likely contributed to Cyber Monday’s spread across the globe.
