The Group Stage analysis: Group A

With only 3 days until the biggest sports event of the year starts, we decided to bring you a small analysis of the 8 world cup groups and our predictions of how good they´ll do.

Today, we start with Group A.

RUSSIA:

The host team participates in the wrld cup without having to go through the qualifying stage like the other 31 teams. The Russians are far from their best level, which was before the USSR separation but still, they will have a stadium full of Russians supporting them on every game; the local team usually has a good performance and even though Russia won´t have the protagonism they used to have, we are sure thy will deliver overall good games.

The Russian offensive force is based on a strong left side. As a team they create overall few scoring opportunities so they rely on a good performance by their solid deffense; the Russian defense have a bada time against teams attacking under a ball controlled and well constructed plays.

Head Coach: Stanislav Cherchesov
Captain: Igor Akinfev
Stars: Alan Dzagoev, Yuri Shirkov
Worldcup´s Assistance: 11 participations (USSR)
Best performance ever: 4th Place
How far they´ll go?: Group Stage

SAUDI ARABIA

Throughout history, this national team has been coached by more than 53 head coaches from different nationalities, between them, leyends like Ferenc Puskas and Fran Rijkaard, but despite this, the Arabians haven´t been able to trascend in a single world cup. On a Regional level, they have reached 6 times the finals and have won three times The Asian Footbal cup - this is like the world cup, but only Asian countries can participate.

With 71 goals in 116 games, Majed Abdullah is their top historic scorer... but Mohammed Al-Sahlawi is their top active scorer with 23 goals, and he will leading his team on this world cup.

The expectations are high for this team, especially because their current head coach has already won a Copa America - like the world cup, but only for teams from America - with a former team, so we know he has experience coaching team across highly competitive and short tournaments such as the world cup.

Head Coach: Juan Antonio Pizzi
Captain: Osama Hawsawi
Stars: Mohamed Al-Sahlawi
Worldcup´s Assistance: 5 participations
Best performance ever: Best 16 in 1994
How far they´ll go?: Group Stage

EGYPT

The world cup celebrated in Italy in 1990 was the last time we saw Egypt play this tournament; that time they didn´t make it out of the group stage and they had to wait 28 years for the Egyptian fans to watch their team play a World cup Game.

Lead by one of the best players Egypt has seen wear their colors: Mohammed Salah, the pharaos are back to the bigggest football celebration and even thogh their captain and Liverpool star Salah won´t be playing the first two games due to a shoulder injury suffered in the UEFA Champions league final game, we are confident a possible scenario where Egypt advance to the knockout stage is not that far.

With 7 African Cup championships, Egypt has participated on several conferederarion cups, so we are certain that with that experience, we are looking at one of the main teams from the African continent.

Head Coach: Hector Cuper
Captain: Mohamed Salah
Stars: Mohamed Salah
Worldcup´s Assistance: 3
Best performance ever: Group Stage
How far they´ll go?: Best 16

URUGUAY:

The Uruguayian team is one of the big ones in the world cup history, not just because they have won the Cup 2 times, but also because throughout history they are protagonists on every tournament they participate in, and 15 America Cup championships back this statement.

Uruguay has players that are part of several world class clubs in Europe; we are certain that Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani will lead this warrior´s team far into this tournament, where the garra charrúa will be put to the test more than one time.

Head Coach: Óscar Washington Tabárez
Captain: Diego Godin
Stars: Luis Suarez
Worldcup´s Assistance: 12
Best performance ever: Champion in 1930 and 1950
How far they´ll go?: Best 8

i will see Uruguay in semi finals.

Wow! It would be fun watching The World Cup! Can't Wait! May the best team Wins :)

I also foresee a dark world cup for the hosts of the tournaments!
The performance of Egypt will largely depend on the fitness of the Salah, without him Egypt is a mediocre team!
Uruguay should easily win the group and progress!
My prediction:

  1. Uruguay
  2. Saudi Arabia
  3. Egypt
  4. Russia

Russia would top that group. I believe they would be motivated by the facts that they are the host.
Uruguay haven't really been at their best of late but I predict they would be in second place.
Salah and eleny are not 100% fit to carry egypt through the group stages.

Good analysis, I agree with the prediction, however Russia could be a surprise. Their form hasn't been good, but the being the host nation the supporters could carry them.

Anyone around to answer my question about this WC account?

I think Uruguay and Russia are the strong teams in this group. However, am rooting for Egypt and I hope they can power through to the next stage- 28 years is a long time to have waited :)

Nice analysis. I also think, that Uruguay and Egypt will survive the group phase.

Uruguay is always a fun and exciting team to watch! Can't wait to see what will they show on this Mundial.

According to me the outcome in group A is clear. Uruguay and Russia are strong favorites. Saudi Arabia has not any chance. The genius of Salah is not enough Egypt to pass the group.
