Try to have at least 32 ETH when they change algo
Soon ETH will go from Pow to Sharding Proof of Concept and you will need 32 ETH to make a validator, which will be pretty much a miner with around 5% ROI.
You will have to run a node of some kind and lock coins there so they can produce blocks and mine more coins.
This thing is gonna be called Casper so now if you hear about it.. dont think its about a friendly ghost.
Right now 32 ETH is around 8,813.12 United States Dollar but keep in mind it used to be $1,432.88 per ETH on ATH :)
So 45852$.. changes a perspective right ?

I thought you needed 1,500 ETH to be a validator. When did this change?
You are right, i have also read this a while ago. For instance in this article posted in may this year they talk about needing 1500 eth. https://ambcrypto.com/how-become-ethereum-eths-casper-validator/
I think i found the answer to your question:
Originally it was said to be about 1250 (https://blog.ethereum.org/2016/03/05/serenity-poc2/) but then the price of Ether started to rise and there was speculation that it would be set at 35 (EDIT: Currently plan is 32 minimum as per Mauve Paper - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1maFT3cpHvwn29gLvtY4WcQiI6kRbN_nbCf3JlgR3m_8/edit#) which is the last I heard. However to the best of my knowledge the actual amount isn't set in stone whilst they develop the final details. You can see the details on the latest specification on GitHub:

I think price of ETH will bounce soon as people will try to buy ETH and hold them to become a validator
It would be nice to currently have but would need 29 & half more to reach that goal. Tough to buy one full coin now. Wish I had kept some of the ether I sold to buy other alt coins that are not doing all that well.
