How blockchain technology disrupts traditional network effects

Blockchain technology has a lot of potential but I feel like many people including myself want to better understand the specifics behind the promise of the technology. Here's my stab at why blockchain will disrupt large existing companies like facebook that depend on network effects to prevent competition.
