Depositing STEEM into steemit
I purchased some STEEM from Bittrex a couple of days ago. Is it possible to transfer it directly to steemit, i.e. without converting to Bitcoin first? I can't seem to find such an option.

I was as confused as you about this first. But apparently when you withdraw yoy just use the username you have on steemit since they can only be unique. The memo is literally if yoy want to add a small comment to the transaction. I suggest "to the moon" ;)
thing is it was so easy that it totally slipped my mind that it works without a 24 digit and letter address.
Oh...
Coming from the regular (and complex) crypto world I would never have thought of this.
