In a new report, the New Zealand-based crypto currency exchange Cryptopiaya claimed that the loss of the cyber attack last week could be more than $ 16 million, thought to be more than expected.
While cyber attacks on crypto currency exchanges continued, on January 14, Cryptopia announced that it would not be available for a period of time due to unspecified maintenance, and then announced that the stock market was undergoing a security breach that caused a great deal of loss. The attack was under investigation, including New Zealand police.
As a result of his investigations by the crypto currencies and the blockchain data analysis firm, Elementus, the company claimed that the cyber attackers stole Ethereum (ETH) worth $ 16 million as a result of the attack. Elementus co-founder Nuria Gutierrez, news.bitcoin.coma said in a statement, using multiple wallets, the attack is done in small operations, as different from the usual attacks, he said:
"More than one wallet was used in the attack, which is a bit strange. In the past we have seen other attacks, virtual thieves had stolen the money in a single operation, but in this case the attacker was very careful and transferred the money in small amounts."
Elementus data indicate that none of the 76,000 different wallets used by the attackers were smart contract-based, suggesting that attackers might have access to thousands of different keys, not a private key.
Unlike the attackers who noticed the vulnerabilities in the smart contract of a crypto currency wallet and who made their attacks fast until it became clear, the New Zealand police were investigating the incident next to the Elementus statement stating that the thieves were moving quite slowly in the attack on Cryptopia and that they continued their transactions for five days until Cryptopia noticed. also announced that the investigation will continue because of the mixed structure of the attack.
