Twitter wants to tackle fraud with cryptocurrencies

Twitter wants to tackle cryptocurrency related fraud on the social media.

That says a company spokesman against Bloomberg.

Twitter is aware of "manipulation" around bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and wants to take measures to prevent deceptive accounts from coming into contact with users. The spokesman did not want to elaborate on what actions the company exactly wants.

Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, said on Tuesday that the company is working on solutions to address scams around cryptocurrencies. He reacted to a complaint from Emin Gün Sirer, co-director of an American collective of scientists that investigates applications of cryptocurrencies.

"Spam around cryptocurrency has taken on unbearable proportions," Sirer explains to Bloomberg. "It is impossible to talk about the subject without entering some spammer who tries to trickle people's virtual coins with false promises."

Facebook already took measures in January to counter fraud with cryptocurrencies. The social medium prohibits advertisements around bitcoin and other crypto coins. In spite of this, a number of users managed to circumvent the ban in the past few weeks.

I'm so glad that Twitter's on the case. Do they care if we get ripped off in Dollars, too?

I think that is not as much as a problem. People recognize these scams way easier. Crypto is new and hard to understand for some people.

Yes, that's a good point, but I doubt that Twitter really cares about this, and suspect that Twitter is actually participating in an effort to discourage the use of cryptocurrencies. I have no evidence. I'm just a suspicious character.
