It will require some complex changes in the daemon code but I'm confident some coin is already planning such change...
Well, whatever one coin does, steem could hopefully just implement or copy.
Most coins are based on another coin, incorporate improvements from other coins, and try make the whole better.
As a coin developer, I can name base coin I used, coins I borrowed improvements from and how I made the whole better...
Basically the only thing that matters then is the community and integrations. If those are big, the coin can become whatever it needs to be.
