The Ratings

Because I can't post the file containing the ratings (because it's paid intellectual property), I decided to list some observations regarding the list of letter grades:

  1. The highest letter grade received was a B. Those that received a B were EOS and Ethereum. The runner-ups (Cardano, NEO, and Steem) received a B- (B-minus). These currencies all focus on smart contracts, which was very interesting to me, but where was ETC? You can say it's because nothing is built on top of ETC, but how is that different than EOS, or Cardano? In fact, ETC even announced a partnership/airdrop, so I'm not sure why some coins in this "B-range" received a B, while others did not.

  2. Top coins that received a C+ were the following: Bitcoin, Dash, Litecoin, NEM, and Decred. I could make millions of comparisons between all these coins and their respective letter grades, but I just want to focus on one. I actually found it odd that Bitcoin and Litecoin both received the same letter grade. If price, popularity, and value over time were the only factors, you could totally give Bitcoin a higher letter grade. But, as you can see from the letter grades, that wasn't their focus. That being said, they must have focused on other factors.

    • If you compare Bitcoin and Litecoin, they are roughly the same coin. However, Litecoin's tx fees are far lower, and their tx times are far faster. They've also implemented, or if nothing else, are working on SegWit, Lightning Network, and Atomic Swap. So, it is very odd that these two received the same exact grade, as one, in my opinion is superior.

Confused

I'd love some comments regarding this so we could get some conversations rolling. So, if you have any questions or observations regarding these letter grades, please reach out!

Sort:

c+ for bitcoin. really?

Right once these letter grades were announced, I was VERY confused as to what factors would play into these. Looking at these grades, though, it's clear that price and popularity play a pretty insignificant role. I just revised my post (for legal-ish reasons), and LTC, Dash, and several others were the ones that REALLY surprised me.

Because things like ETH and EOS received the highest grades, it's clear that technological aspects play a much larger role in the determination of these letter grades. So, it seems like LTC and Dash should have received a higher grade than BTC (again, just based on the factors it looks like they were using).
