On this day, 8 years ago, Laszlo Hanyecuz paid 10,000 Bitcoins for two large pizzas. At the time, one BTC was worth $0.008, meaning Hanyecuz traded $80 worth of BTC. Today 10,000 Bitcoins is worth around $80 million, what a huge difference!
“It wasn’t like bitcoins had any value back then, so the idea of trading them for a pizza was incredibly cool,” Hanyecz famously said in a 2013 interview with The New York Times. “No one knew it was going to get so big.” CCN

Above is Hanyecuz's original post on Bitcointalk, in which he was ordering 2 large pizzas. Mining was a hobby for him, thus Hanyecuz did not see the true potential of BTC. But we can't blame him, no one had anticipated Bitcoin's insane growth.
Mr Hanyecz had acquired the bitcoin through mining – a process that uses computing power to solve complex mathematical puzzles in order to generate new units of the cryptocurrency. Three months ago, in February, Hanyecuz paid bitcoins for two pizzas again. How much did he end up paying? No, it was not 10,000 Bitcoins again. Instead, he used the Lightning Network to pay 0.00649 BTC. His payment went through almost instantly!
“I don’t think it was a mistake. It’s like if you could go back in time and buy Google stocks when they were $1 or something… At the time it wasn’t worth much and I feel like if I hadn’t done it, someone else would have. I wouldn’t have spent $100m on pizza, right? But if I hadn’t done that, maybe it wouldn’t have become popular.”
