Fresh news surrounding bitcoin never ends. The latest news seems to be the apparent purchase of GitHub by Microsoft for $2bn. Microsoft ownership now calls into question whether the bitcoin core code base should remain on GitHub. The feedback already on twitter and forums appears to be its time for the code to migrate away from GitHub and out of the hands of Microsoft. In fact many developers have already started discussions of migrating other projects of GitHub since rumors began.

The issue at stake here is the independence of Bitcoin. Software giants like Microsoft have always had a history of buying up rivals in order to crush competition. Microsoft actions should also always be viewed with suspicion. How Microsoft ownership will affect bitcoin nobody exactly knows at this stage. However the Bitcoin community should not wait around to find out. It is my opinion that actions need to be taken immediately to move the code. The community should not wait for Microsoft to implement its own policies on GitHub and should act now.
