The first place to buy and sell Bitcoins publicly was "The Bitcoin Market", which is now defunct, introduced in 2010. If she bought them in 2009 it was likely from an individual who was selling them on a very small scale.
Makes sense. She'll try to track the outgoing $3 transaction to see if that might identify such a potential individual, but I agree it's unlikely to work. Thanks!
