May 22 is Bitcoin Pizza Day: Get 2 Pies for 80 Million Dollars!

May 22, 2019 marks the nine-year anniversary of the historic 10,000 Bitcoin pizza purchase.
Documented by posts on Bitcointalk*, Florida programmer Laszlo Hanyecz famously offered up 10K of the Bitcoins he mined on his computer in exchange for anyone to deliver two pizzas to his home in Jacksonville. How prescient!

Fair market value was $41 for 10,000 BTC at the time of the first real-world transaction, which can be viewed on the Blockchain. Bitcoin (BTC) market value then was approximately $.0041.
That’s 41/1000ths of a cent.
Today 10K BTC are worth approximately $80,000,000. Yes, 80 million dollars.
The best BPD so far was in 2018, when BTC was falling to $8,500 from a massive Wall Street futures pump to $19K late in 2017. 10K BTC were worth $85 mill!
(At this printing, the price of BTC was near $5,300. I’ll be updating as BPD 2019 approaches.)
User @Laszlo was the first to sacrifice his Bitcoin (BTC) wealth for the greater good, and made the world’s first known BTC transaction -- for 2 large pies. Anyone can view this historic transaction on the Blockchain.

Apparently Laszlo mined many more thousands blocks of BTC, back in the early days of Bitcoin, and made even more pizza purchases, at least until the price of BTC reached a whopping 6 cents in August that year. By November, a follower noted, 10K BTC were worth $2600. Bitcoin, while intrinsically volatile, has been skyrocketing in value recently. The payment from the famous 10,000 Bitcoin trade for pizza in 2010 would be worth $18,000,000 by BPD 2017.
We shall see what 10K BTC will be worth on Bitcoin Pizza Day 2019.

The 10K Pizza Purchase has also been commemorated by Bitcoin Nerd who minted the solid silver coins shown above and below. The public wallet address: 17SkEw2md5avVNyYgj6RiXuQKNwkXaxFyQ is also forever remembered in silver.

The international Bitcoin community has been officially celebrating Bitcoin Pizza Day on May 22 since 2014, the fifth year of Bitcoin’s launch, when author and bitcoin advocate Bit*Jane published informative and entertaining articles about the first transaction and launched an epic Twitter campaign. Several online merchants got involved, offering Bitcoin Pizza Day Specials at places like Gyft and Pizza For Coins, and local and national media got on board:

After the first successful Bitcoin Pizza Day, BitJane thanked all the merchants for participating in the first official BPD. Gyft tweeted back to BitJane:

“We thought this was a real thing!”

Bit*Jane replied,

“It is now.”
