Why is it so difficult to explain Bitcoin to my parents?
I realized that whenever it comes to explaining Bitcoin to my parents, friends or colleagues something is missing for understanding its value. I used to start my explanation from the basics of blockchain technology, trying to explain its high-level abstraction by means of common known allegories and metaphors. However, the understanding of blockchain principles rarely helped them to grasp the value of the technology.
Recently I realized the reason. And I guess it's the problem of understanding money itself. When I ask them "What do you think money is?" they usually specify its physical attributes and use cases but miss the very idea of money.
And only when the idea of money is captured the rest tech explanation makes sense and becomes valuable.
Without understanding the fundamentals of money as a technology it's impossible to fully grasp the pros of blockchain.
Otherwise, it's like an attempt to explain nuclear power (Bitcoin) without diving into atomic energy (Blockchain) to someone who is not familiar with the ideas underlying science (Money).
The older generation grew up believing in the mighty power of the fiat system and it will be very difficult to talk them out of it. Don't try to convert everyone into a crypto believer because it will only make you more frustrated. The same applies to religion, politics, and food choice.
Fully agree with you. I don't wanna be neither a preacher nor a missionary. Just was trying to satisfy my closest people's curiosity about buzz words like bitcoin and blockchain, and realized what made it so difficult for them to understand.
