🔶 The white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos)

The tenacious claws and hard tail allow woodpeckers to feel comfortable sitting on the tree.
This bird prefers to settle in old mixed forests with a large number of fallen trees, since it is in old, dead and rotting tree trunks that the main food of the woodpecker is the larva of the bark beetle. The woodpecker population is in need of littered forest areas, therefore any ennobling work on forest clearing, harvesting dead wood leads to a sharp decrease in the number of white-backed and other species of woodpeckers.

The woodpecker makes holes for the nest in old trees with rotten and brittle bark. And this is not surprising, because such a crust is easier to destroy.
However, he makes several hollows at once, and then the female chooses the suitable one. And by this, it is of great benefit to the rest of the birds, which themselves cannot make hollows. They settle in these empty new hollows, or look for old abandoned ones.
