Takahē (Porphyrio hochstetteri) • Tiritiri Matangi Island, New Zealand
“These unusual and strikingly colored birds were once thought to be extinct before being rediscovered in remote wild. Now they exist as limited few in protected areas such as Tiritiri Matangi Island. This adult is part of a family that I saw foraging near the lighthouse each morning of my stay. They are not much larger than a chicken, but on this island they are the giants.”
