Altricial chicks that have just hatched are completely helpless and, therefore, will need help. In suburban areas, finding altricial birds that fall or are thrown from their nests are common. If this happens, you can immediately return the baby bird to its nest. If not, you can take it home and take care of it yourself. You can also just let the baby bird where it fell. Let nature determine its destiny.

If the baby bird you find is a baby bird, it shouldn't be outside the nest and there is usually something wrong. The baby bird may fall from its nest or be pushed by its stronger sibling. Baby birds left by their mothers have almost no chance of survival if left alone.

It is important for you to ensure that the baby birds that you find are baby birds that are left before you take them home. The most common situations for providing assistance to chicks or adult birds are: when a baby bird falls from its nest and cannot find or reach its nest; when the baby bird is injured, weak or dirty; or after you have watched a spare nest that has been made for more than two hours and the mother bird has not returned to feed her chicks.
The best thing you can do in a situation like this is to contact the bird rehabilitation center that wants to care for the baby bird. In addition, they are also experienced in caring for chicks and doing their best to keep them alive.
If you cannot find a bird rehabilitation center in your city, contact your veterinarian or environmental rescue worker in your city who can provide the information needed. In some cases, there may not be a bird rehabilitation center or wildlife rehabilitation center in your area, but there could be a licensed rehabilitator living in your area.
