The Green Woodpecker
The Green Woodpecker
Hi friends, I hope you're fine? In Belgium, the flu arrived and as my son caught it and I spent the weekend taking care of him and making lots of kisses healers, I caught it too. So we are both sick at home for the whole week. We are not super fit ... We just had lunch and while my son is watching some episodes of Peppa Pig, I take the opportunity to make an article on the green woodpecker. I like to read and learn about particular animals that come out of the lot as previously, the hummingbird or flamingo.
The green woodpecker is a bird species belonging to the family Picidae.
It has the green upper side, the yellow rump, the gray-green underside and the top of the red head. The female is distinguished by its black mustache, while that of the male is red, surrounded by black. The young are lighter and spotted.
Food and reproduction
It feeds mostly on insects and larvae, caught on the ground. He loves anthills because ants account for 90% of his diet. It also attacks hives in winter and supplements their diet with seeds and berries.
The green woodpecker digs its nest in the trunk of a leafy tree (sometimes even in a pole) for at least two weeks. The nest is 20 to 50 cm deep, and the inlet is about 5 to 7 cm in diameter. Spawning, which occurs once a year, consists of 5 to 8 eggs, white, incubated by both parents for a fortnight. The young stay for about three weeks in the nest, then, after their flight, live with their parents for another three weeks before leaving and take up their independence.
The green woodpecker can be seen in much of Europe.
He is sedentary and lives in groves, parks, orchards and in the mountains as well.
Singing
The green peaks have a very loud call cry, like a laugh. This cry also has a role of territorial manifestation. When he moves in flight, or when he is surprised and disturbed, he pushes a typical kuk-ku-kuk ... kuk-kuk ... ku ... ". Although it also sometimes drums, beating its beak against a dry branch many times in succession, the green woodpecker rarely uses its drumming as a means of communication, but it uses it to know the resonance state of dead wood, and thus find food there.
Behavior
When the green spike hunts for food on the ground, it remains very quiet so as not to attract the attention of predators.
To see it, it is at the moment when it flies that we will have more luck because at that moment, he utters a cry that looks like a "kiak".
In urban areas, you can see it hopping on the lawns, completely uncovered but remaining attentive to its environment.
In case of danger, he will take refuge in the trees, hiding at the sight of the predator or the intruder by positioning himself behind a trunk or a branch, and turning around if necessary thanks to his powerful and sharp claws.
Outside the breeding season, the green woodpecker lives alone.
As soon as the winter is over, the green woodpecker begins to sing again and express its territorial song.
His flight is typical, indeed, he alternates phases of fast and powerful beats and phases of rest wings folded, which gives him an undulating flight, fast and direct. The flight is usually short distance and at the end of which the peak is against a trunk or a branch.
Woody Woodpecker
Woody Woodpecker is the best known woodpecker. Indeed, it is an American cartoon character created in the animation studios of Walter Lantz.
This green peak with particular laughter appears for the first time in 1940 in a short film entitled Knock Knock. The Woody Woodpecker Show series, consisting of 192 episodes and distributed by Universal Studios, lasted until 1972, making Woody the last of the big screen stars. He rubs shoulders with Wally Walrus and Buzz Buzzard.
Woody Woodpecker has a strident and repeated laugh.
It creates damage in the wood at a vertiginous speed of jackhammer, which is an opportunity for gags and especially a lot of enmity on the part of its protagonists, including Wally Walrus Walrus. Woody Woodpecker thinks only of himself and his main concerns are fighting, stealing, eating and courting girls. In his very first appearance in Knock Knock in 1940, he harassed two pandas, Andy and his father, apparently just for fun.
Initially endowed with a crazy character in the first two decades, Woody Woodpecker has a little sleep and has a relationship with his fiancee Winnie Woodpecker1. They are responsible for two children, a nephew and a niece. Adventures with the family are especially developed in the comics dedicated to him.
