Tablet PC sales fell for the first time in 2015, but the number of tablet PCs in actual use is expected to decline for the first time this year, according to data in a new forecast for US market research firm Forrester.

The company expects the number of tablets in use over the next five years to fall by 1 percent each year, while the number of smartphones is expected to increase by 77 percent a year.

This is especially true for large phones, especially in developing markets such as China and India, where most smartphone owners (65% and 622%, respectively) have large phones ranging in size from five to six inches diagonally. In contrast, only 6.4 percent of the population in China and 1.1 percent of India have desktop computers, according to Forrester.

Smartphones are usually the main device for users in developing countries to connect to the Internet, a field where smart phone sales are growing rapidly. Larger smartphones allow users to perform a wider range of activities and eliminate the need for tablet computers.

On the other hand, the use of tablets is higher in developed markets, such as the United States and the five European countries (UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy) where only 33% and 23% respectively of adult smartphone owners own large-screen phones, according to Forrester.

Unfortunately for tablets, 36% of smartphone users in these countries are planning to buy large-screen smartphones in the near future.
