BIAFRA

Biafra is that girl in your class that loves to put everyone in trouble. She is beautiful, intelligent, curvy, highly opinionated and has all the boys fighting over her.

She is the kind of girl that the teachers are always confused about what to do with her. She's brilliant, yet, troublesome. She's the kind of student that will lead a riot in school, and use superior argument to win when the matter gets to the Principal's office. She's the kind of girl that will ask teachers very difficult questions just to embarrass them.

Last week, she landed the whole class in trouble, when she led everyone to walk out of a class session. The issue was simple. It was time up, yet, the Physics teacher, Mr. Adamu refused to leave the class.

Biafra simply stood up, went to front of the class and for five minutes spoke words that instigated a protest. Biafra was hot blooded. She always stood for justice. She always wanted to fight for her rights. But, most times, she went about it the wrong way.

There was a day, she went to the cafeteria and seized all the coolers of rice Iya Mulika brought to sell to students during break time. She did this because there was a naked wire in the cafeteria and she's been telling the school authorities to do something about this. That day when she seized the food, the Principal sent for an electrician to fix it.

When they got to SS3, the school authorities were to pick prefects. The top choice for Head Girl was Biafra, but, no, she wasn't given the position. In fact, she wasn't given any position at all. The position of Head Girl was rather given to Nigeria.

Now, Nigeria is also a girl in same class who comes from a very wealthy home. Her father is the PTA Chairman, and her mother, a Fashion Designer is the one who sews the school uniforms. Nigeria is brilliant, but, can't compare to Biafra.

That day when the prefects were announced, Biafra felt bad. She thought she would get that position. She was the best for it. She had a diary filled up with plans. She wanted to start up a Press Club, a JETS club and even a Farmers Club. She had written letters which she planned to send to the government to help them with funds to start up a Young Entrepreneurs Forum. She had ideas.

But, the Principal didn't want the trouble and fire that came with Biafra. The Principal, Mr. Williams, was a British. He had lived and worked in Nigeria for years. The position of the Principal was always held by a British. He was the seventh Brit to hold that position. He didn't want things to spoil under his time.

Biafra did not let go. She knew that her goals in life were bigger than her secondary school. She never gave up. She collaborated with her friends in other schools and started up and Independent Movement. She called Nigeria aside and asked that they also collaborate. Nigeria refused. She begged, threatened, blackmailed. Nigeria stood her ground.

Today, she is out of school, the fire hasn't died, she is still fighting for what she believes is right. Biafra is a girl with a mission.
