The #MattesFile: Did TYT and HuffPo’s Ryan Grim get hoodwinked?

Last week in a previous article I raised some serious questions regarding the credibility of a number of media reports alleging Russian or other foreign manipulation of the Bernie Sanders for President 2016 campaign, OR Facebook groups supportive of his campaign as alleged by a claimed administrator of some of those groups named John Mattes. What created the basis for these doubts was a series of suspiciously aggressive articles targeting the Senator from February in POLITICO by Edward-Isaac Dovere, the chief Washington correspondent for the news agency that is exclusively dedicated to politics on the federal and state level. In this update, we will examine Mattes’ record of statements and features in the media in more detail since entering the public record and claiming to have warned of infiltration of the electoral process by foreign parties as early as September 2016.

Huffington Post’s then correspondent Ryan Grim helped give John Mattes’ tale of “exposing collusion” legs with two articles in March and April 2017.

Also a new proposal will be explored, which is that one of the reasons that Mattes has not been put under greater scrutiny until now is that his story was actually introduced to the public by a bona fide progressive reporter and activist, TYT political correspondent Ryan Grim (now of 'The Intercept, then of Huffington Post). A long-time marijuana and drug legalization advocate, Grim followed the 2016 election and many other topics for The Young Turks and also began publishing in Washington DC a series of progressive-oriented comics and literature under the Strong Arm Press publishing mark that attack the Trump cabinet appointees like Betsy DeVos and Tom Price. Unfortunately, this reporter who tends to work as a media advocate for Justice Democrats appears to have been complicit in spreading a canard that paints Bernie Sanders supporters as at best dupes of a Putin scam and at worst as agents of Russian collusion. Grim may not have intended to put wind in the sails of this lie, but it’s reached pretty far shores thanks to him not doing his due diligence in verifying Mattes’ account.
