The Bermuda Triangle-Love and Hope In Another Dimension

Chapter One

No One Wants Me

This is the story of a young orphaned woman leaving everything she knows in Ireland for her dream to go to America in search of a better life. Chloe was only seventeen and her parents had died from typhus. She had no other living relatives other than an aunt, and her aunt had told her she would not take her in, and to go live on the streets.  Chloe was an adventuresome girl even at an early age. On her first night, she found refuge at the Catholic convent in Dublin, but she knew the life in a convent was not for her. Chloe had been familiar with the Catholic Church since birth and christened a Catholic. Once she had talked to a sister from the convent in Dublin, and she seemed very kind. Sister Aine had told her about her life at the convent. Chloe heard from one of the workers at the convent that there was a Captain Blye; he is a captain of a ship that sails to America. This captain wanted nothing to do with his own daughter and never wrote or came by to see her, and she has lived at the convent since she was eight. His love was for the ocean, his ship, and whiskey. This story is very sad to Chloe, but she is very curious about America and she gets permission to go in the library. She could not read very well, but she spent hours finding anything on America that she could find. Captain Blye's little girl was also often found in the library reading whatever she could find about America. She never spoke to Chloe except one time; it was to tell where she could find a book on the type of ships that typically made the voyage across the Atlantic to America. Chloe's heart was sad every time she thought about that lonely little girl, Liz. The convent was not just a lot of hard work, Chloe found the convent life very boring. The Mother Superior had talked to her several times about what she thought a young lady should do with her life, but Chloe had no inclination in that direction. She knew that she must get away from the convent and the life it represented for her.  The sisters watched her every move and had scolded her once for putting a half-eaten crumpet in her pocket. However, after cleaning, everyone was tired and the mood became more relaxed. Chloe purposed in her heart that she would pick her opportunity to leave the convent. She hoped by the time that she was discovered missing, there would be too much distance between herself and the convent for them to have an easy way of coming after her. Chloe studied all she could find on America, and kept her little suitcase prepared at all times for a hasty departure. She made sure that her few clothes were in the best condition possible. The plan for her escape was going to be a miracle in that Chloe had no money and had no plan, other than getting away from the convent to the docks, and then getting passage on a ship bound for America. Chloe watched and learnt how everything worked, and the times that might provide an opportunity for her escape. So one brisk cold night Chloe left the convent by stowing away in the carriage that brought various farm goods to the convents kitchen. Chloe had been working in the kitchen and had helped with the groceries that arrived in the carriage. Chloe had seen the predictable slackness of the routine of ferrying groceries to the convent from the city, and decided it was a way to make her escape. She felt she would be free, and on an adventure, she had no concept of the perils that waited in Dublin city let alone on the high seas, America and beyond. Chloe will face many dangers and befriend many people along her perilous journeys. She becomes aware of an unseen hand guiding her dream, and she will have to learn quickly to avoid the adventure turning into a nightmare. If Chloe could at the end of her life looked back, she would have seen her life moving through the course of time, and events, and would have seen that when she was using her intuition she found a path that was made right for her. She would see a very special group of people that her path crossed and will be a part of her special journey. Chloe has many choices to make along her journey and discovers that she has the potential of going down the wrong path. She is responsible for her actions, and each action has a consequence. Chloe has been learning to listen to a still small voice in her "Heart," that guides her to the path that she is meant to take. She is learning to learn from her mistakes, so she does not have to repeat them. From the streets of Dublin, the convent in Ireland, to the ship to America the cast of characters that Chloe's life is weaved into, they all in one fashion or another seek a better life. Most are going to struggle immensely to even come close to the path that they should be following. Now underneath the burlap coverings on the carriage, Chloe soon grew very cold, but the cold night air kept her alert. The journey by carriage she had heard took an hour and a half, but Chloe had no sense of how much time had passed. She could see nothing, and only heard the noise of the carriage wheels over the dirt road and the occasional bump. The driver could be heard singing old Irish folk songs, and then there would be periods of silence when Chloe wandered if he had fallen asleep. She hoped he would not, and falls off, leaving the carriage and her going down the highway without a driver. Chloe tried not to think what might befall her if she was caught making her escape. She was not so much worried about the driver because he seemed to a nice older man, but the unknown was what she feared the most. What if they stopped somewhere along the way and they needed to load something where she lay and she was discovered. She concentrated on her adventure to America, how wonderful it will be in America. She could see in her mind's eye the big tall buildings that rose to the sky and the stores stretching for miles with pretty things. While it was still dark, Chloe could tell the carriage was slowing down and she figured it would stop, and then the risk of someone finding her stowed away under the burlap covers was great. Therefore, as soon as she heard that the wheels of the carriage had stopped turning, her agility put to good use, and she uncovered herself and her small suitcase and bounded off the carriage and into the dark streets of Dublin.  Occasionally she could smell various smells and some of them not very pleasant. The night was chilly so she paused at a barrel that had burning embers in it to warm herself. She heard faint sounds in the distance but she could not distinguish them. However, she knew that she must not tarry on a dark street. Chloe tried not to think about the fact that she was alone at night in a big city with many dangers and evil lurking around every dark alley that she passed. Her intuition told her to keep moving to the sound in the distance of a church bell. Surely, that would be a better part of the town. She hoped that it was a church bell and she might find some refuge there. Chloe knew that the docks where the ships that left for America would probably be easier to find in the light of day. She was getting tired and thirsty, and had no idea how to find water. Nevertheless, she must keep her mind focused on moving towards the sound of what she hoped was the church bells.   Chloe could feel her heart pounding as she ran as fast as she could over the cobble streets. In a few minutes, she tried to take in her surroundings and realized that she was probably not in the best of areas. Slowing down, and beginning to feel tired from her running, she began to hear cursing and loud talking and as she came to a fast walk, she could smell whiskey. It reminded her of the smell of her uncle and his friends when they were drinking whiskey. Chloe crossed over to the other side in preparation if she had to pass a pub. Her right leg had begun to cramp and she knew she would have to keep moving, no matter the pain. She had no idea what lay ahead on the dark street. She only knew nothing good would come from a young girl alone at night, to be anywhere near a pub.  Just as the cramp began to ease off, out of nowhere she found her self-surrounded by three men that obviously had too much whiskey to drink. They were loud, and two of them seemed to have to hold on to the other one to keep from falling. The largest one of the lot laughed and said, "Well look at what we have here, a nice little wench for the three of us." Chloe felt as if she would collapse, and then she felt hot water running in her mouth. She tried to scream, but nothing came from her throat.
