Give Bees a Chance: Why Bees Are Cool and How You Can Help Them Save the World (or at least survive the Spring)
Spring is in the Air!
and honey bees need some extra care!
Stop shaking your head and listen up.
We understand that you have probably already heard about the plight of bees. If the bees die, we all die! Oh, that sounds so gloomy but don't be fooled... it is totally a thing. Most of us don't think about the plight of bees or, more importantly, the global impact that these litle guys have on the entire Earth. Insects as a whole are the ruling class on this planet and while they have no voice to shout out to us puny humans, they lack the conscious choice to be a part of this living system that we all co-exist in (allegedly) and they are just a little bug in a big, big world... they are massively important.
Bees, Please!
Do you like pretty flowers? Do you enjoy seeing them bloom each spring? Do you get a dash of relief whent he trees come back and the tulips pop up? For most of us that don't happen to be blessed by eternal summer and fantastic weather (we're looking at you, SoCal), we have to deal with these things called seasons. They can be cool and exciting, but they generally get old rather quickly. By the time February hits here in Idaho we're bribing groundhogs to give us color, life and change.
For those that know what I am rambling about... take a moment and thank a bee. Thank a lot of bees, because they do good work.
If you like honey, in any fashion, you should probably show some love to these bee-autiful insects!
Okay, all corniness aside...
Bees are really cool and they do a lot for the environment. For example, did you know that bees are the biggest source of fertilization for many plants? They provide genetic diversity, keep many plants strong and
Overall, there are more than 15,000 different kinds of bees across the world. They range from friendly bumble bees to the overplayed African bees. In North America there are 4,000 species alone. These guys work their asses off for us. Well, technically, the ladies in some species work their asses off. Depending on the species, sometimes the hard workers are lady bees. They have a diverse social structure which can show us a lot about our own cultures if we care to take the time to look.
That's Cool... I guess?
Ther are a lot of cool things about bees. For example, scientists have recently found that bees recognize human faces. Furthermore, a 2011 study showed that bees can have reactionary traits, such as being pessimistic. They can actually
be discouraged from not finding a lot of pollen. Sad bees aren't busy bees and this indicates that they likely have feelings.
That is almost scary when you consider the fact upon birth of a Queen bee, she goes on a murderous rampage on all of the other queen bees. She targets both hatched and unhatched, potential queens of the hive.
Their sting may help to find the missing link to the AIDS. They have wicked problem solving skills. They are... ya. Bees man.
There Is a Point to All of This
We can get really excited about bees, with just cause. That being said, the concern that prompted this article today is that while siting in the spring sun, there is a chill in the air and then these huge gusts of wind. I saw a bee earlier and thought, well that sucks. Bees are kind of delicate, when you look at them as a whole. They have this complex social structure and then they have this dependency on food. The problem is, they can feel (we think) and they can perceive. Chances are, they know it is too cold but they woke up and they are bees and they have a job to do. So, they get up and do it, risking life and limb.
Do the bees care that there isn't enough dandelions in the world or that flowers are blooming late? Do they care about the cold bursts of air that could cause their doom? Do they care that there is limited water this early or that weather can turn from sunny and inconveniently hot when you forgot to use layers to shivering cold with hail, snow or rain at the drop of a hat?
Maybe.... Science hasn't confirmed or denied this.
It doesn't matter though. Bees get out there and save the world like fucking champions.
Champions Deserve a Hand Up
Bees aren't asking you for anything. They merely are trying to help us pesky humans not fucking die. Is that so wrong?
Umm... scientists are out on this little factoid too...
In any case, we can do a simple thing to help the bees...
And Then... As if commanded by the UNIVERSE.... this happened....
As if on cue, this bee flies in my car and is all rubbing up on the chair. He was kind of lethargic but I still had to be quick with the camera.
How to Save the Bees
It was really cool saving the bee and it was simple to do. Bees need sugar specifically because that is what they live off of. Nectar anyone? Nectar is basically just flower sugar water. Since you won't likely have nectar just sitting around, a simple 1:1 Ratio or Water and Cane Sugar is sufficient.
