A father’s love for his daughter(s)

I’m going to get a little emotional on you today because it’s a special day. Today is my oldest daughter’s 6th Birthday!!

A father’s love for his daughter(s) (I have 2, but today is all about the one!) is unparalleled. When we first found out that I would be a father, my answer to which would you prefer a boy or a girl, was a typical man answer: a boy.

What an idiot I was.

I had no idea what to expect, but now I know just how special a relationship between a father and daughter can be and I could not imagine not having my little girls. The snuggles. The kisses. The sweetness. They just melt my heart.

Anyone who has kids and says they don’t have favourites is a bunch of bullshit. Trust me, I have a favourite…it just varies on a day-to-day basis 

Today, my favourite is my eldest. She is a special one and I cannot believe how caring and thoughtful of a person she has become. She is always looking out for her younger sister, and is always conscious of how certain actions affect others. She is incredibly sensitive and sweet. She is incredibly intelligent. Like her dad, she loves math.

She can talk superheroes with the best of them. As a four year-old, she put one of her boy classmates in his place when he suggested that Spider-man was a member of the Justice League. She came home and said “Papa, I told him no. He is an Avenger and that he is a Marvel Character. Justice League is DC: Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Cyborg and Martian Manhunter.” That’s my girl!!

She is a leader, not a follower. She gives me hope of a better future and she will probably be our little social justice advocate.

The problem is…I am also scared shitless.

I fear that she will not be respected.

I fear that she will not respect herself.

I fear that she will think beauty is what defines her.

I fear that she will succumb to the pressures of society to conform her to something she is not.

As a loving father, overcoming those fears and ensuring my daughters know I am there to support them in whatever path they choose is my biggest challenge.

Today is your day Zoe-bear…Papa loves you and is incredible proud of the person you are. Stand proud sweetheart and remember that you are brave and powerful. Happy Birthday!!
