Friday Baseball Prospectus - BA's Hot Sheet - August 11th

in #baseball7 years ago (edited)

This will be a Friday publishing of great minor leaguers to invest in. Information will be drawn from BA's weekly Prospect Hot Sheet.

Daz Cameron, OF, Astros (20)
Low Class A Quad Cities (Midwest)

Cameron remains red-hot since the minor league all-star break, going 12-for-24 with two doubles and two homers in his latest big week. Overall he has hit .335 with seven homers, 37 RBIs and a .980 OPS in the second half. He hit .206 with a .661 OPS in the first half.

Monogrande's Take
Something about Texan teams and guys with names that has three letters starting with D. Dak, Dez, and now...DAZ. This dude is legit - and he is making the case for a promotion to AA or AAA soon. Don't be surprised if the Astros add him into their lineup for the postseason, either.

Lucas Giolito, RHP, White Sox (23)
Triple-A Charlotte (International)

Don't look now, but Giolito is starting to round into form. The beleaguered prospect has delivered four consecutive solid starts to lower his season ERA from 5.38 to 4.70, and is continuing to miss bats at a strong rate. He struck out 13 in 11.2 innings in his latest solid week, giving him 127 punchouts in 122.2 innings on the year.

Monogrande's Take
You won't remember (probably), but Giolito was the best prospect that the Nationals had for at least two years before he was traded to the Sox. You also won't remember that he's had some terrible elbow problems in the past - because he's not showing it throwing 100-mph fastballs and no-no's in the minors. With Sale and Quintana gone, the Ace spot for the Sox is open. Giolito might be the one to take that spot.

Chris Shaw, OF, Giants (23)
Triple-A Fresno (Pacific Coast)

Shaw is in the midst of shifting from first base to left field at Triple-A. The trials of learning a new position clearly haven't impacted his ability to hit. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound lefthanded masher pounded four doubles and three home runs in seven games this week, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Overall Shaw has .295/.350/.528 slash line with 29 doubles and 30 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A this year, and is merely awaiting the call to the majors.

Monogrande's Take
This is the second time I'm including Chris Shaw on this list. This is important for one reason - he's being transitioned to OF. That means September call-up. That means Shaw is going to wow some people in SF, a team with one of the most crazed fanbases in the country. Pick him up when you can, because when he starts to hit bombs in September, his stuff is going to be hot.

Nick Kingham, RHP, Pirates (25)
Triple-A Indianapolis (International)

Kingham made just 12 starts the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery, but has come back in 2017 in a big way. He has won his last four starts at Indianapolis, including a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts on Thursday. That stellar outing followed 7.2 shutout innings in his previous start.

Monogrande's Take
Kingham is a little old to be called a prospect...but I love guys like this. Coming back strong from an injury shows character. I love the heart. I love the grit. And honestly, this guy is really really good. He works as a #3 starter or a relief replacement to the dominant Tony Watson, who was traded to the Dodgers.

That's it! I hope you enjoyed this week's content!

Last week, I was high on Peter Alonso. With the Mets struggling to make sense of their season, it seems likely that he's going to be called up this September.
