The Verdict Is In, Judge Breaks Rookie Record For Homeruns

in #baseball7 years ago (edited)

Last night New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge broke Mark McGwire's record for homeruns by a rookie.

Judge went into the game versus the Kansas City Royals with 48 dingers, one shy of tying the record that was set in 1987 of 49.

The 6'7" slugger smacked two last night to break and set a new record yesterday in quite a show of force.

With 50, Judge now stands alone with the record. The giant outfielder has 13 in the month of September. He's still got a little time to add to his stats too with a handful of games left in the season.

Judge slumped after the all star break after setting the world on fire in the first half of the season. He's returned back to form now after many questioning if his first half stats were a fluke.

Pitchers had time to adjust to facing the slugger and started to feed him pitches up in the zone and hammering him in on the hands.

It appears Judge also adjusted and is chasing less up high but he's still striking out at quite a clip. His 203 strikeouts leads the league in that category but he's also leading in walks with 120.

Any team would forgive his strikeout numbers for the production he gives to a team and he's also a pretty decent fielder to boot.

It'll be interesting to see how he fairs in his second season after everyone's had a better chance to analyze his game and formulate a plan to deal with the behemoth slugger at the dish. Before that though it looks like the Yanks are poised to make some noise in the postseason.

With the win last night against KC, the Yanks are now 4 games back of Boston for the AL lead and only need one more win to clinch home field for the AL wildcard spot.

A terrific read @majorleaguenews - good on Judge for breaking such a long standing record.

I wonder what he's taking...lol.

Getting Hot at the right time! Right before Playoffs!! Let's Go Yankees!! =D

I love Judge. The kid really seems like an all-around good guy. I hope we keep him healthy (and productive) on the Yankees for a long time!!

The future is bright for you guys! Between him and Sanchez there's no shortage of young power. I don't think anyone expected the Yanks to be as good as they are at the start of the season? Good luck to you guys..although i wont be rooting for them :)

I definitely didn't expect the Yanks to be this good. But I'm more than happy to watch them Succeed!

I agree the true test is going to be first in the playoffs and the the next two seasons. If this guy is for real barring injury he is going to break every home run record or is he just a flash in the pan.

That’s a pretty impressive achievement

Good for AJ.. a little bitter sweet. I got to witness McGuire hit #67 and #68 right before the end of his magical homerun season (before Barry Bonds managed to eclipse even Big Mac). But time marches on, and there are always new "kids" poised to be better and break records. Thanks for the post!
