A Road To Immortality: Omar Vizquel, Johan Santana And Carlos Zambrano Elegible to Cooperstown
Me and Hall of Fame Nominee Carlos "El Toro" Zambrano
The Major League Baseball (MLB), made official this Monday, the ballot of retired players eligible for the 2018 Hall of Fame Class and three Venezuelans appear in the list of candidates.
These are Omar Vizquel, Johan Santana, and Carlos Zambrano, who made it to the select group of candidates to enter Cooperstown.
Of the trio of outstanding former players, the former shortstop is the one who emerges as the favorite to win immortality by receiving the support of the members of the Association of North American Baseball Writers, who have until December 31st to vote and decide.
Vizquel is considered one of the greatest shortstops in the history of the Big Leagues. Not surprisingly, he won eleven Gold Gloves, nine consecutively -1994-2001- and eight of them with the Cleveland Indians.
To continue in the race, Venezuelans, chosen for the first time on the ballots, must get at least 5% of the votes, while to become immortal they will need 75%. The shortstop Luis Aparicio is the only Venezuelan, in the prestigious temple of American baseball.
On the ballots are also the Dominican Vladimir Guerrero and the Americans Chipper Jones, Trevor Hoffman, Jim Thome and Andruw Jones. On January 24, the selected ones will be known.
On a personal note, as Venezuelan, I have to say that I am really proud for the effort of our great countrymen who proudly represented us on "The Big Show" It's hard to find the words to express the joy we Venezuelans must feel when we get these Sports Accomplishments, really raises the spirit during these hard and difficult times we are currently living.
